GameCam crashes FSX when exiting

Postby bills on Wed Dec 23, 2009 1:57 am

I recently bought GameCam. It's a great camera but it has three serious bugs when used with Microsoft's Flight Simulator (FSX). I'll post each bug separately.

The first is that when you click on GameCam's tray and select Close, it crashes FSX. Here's a video which illustrates the problem.

And here's DxDiag's output. Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to what could be happening.

Thanks!

First off, I do apologize for the very late response.
As the issues may be related, I hope you don't mind that I have combined
them into a single thread/post. Let's see what we can figure out.

I will download the FSX Demo and do some thorough testing in
the next few days to see if the issues can be reproduced on my PC.

The first is that when you click on GameCam's tray and select Close, it crashes FSX.

Game Cam operates by basically hooking into the game engine. When Game Cam is closed while the
game is running, there is the possibility that it will also close the game itself. Also, Game Cam has
never officially supported recording games in a window and this may be contributing to the issue.

This is the second bug regarding using GameCam with FSX.
During a recording session, if the cursor moves out of the FSX window GameCam stops recording. When the cursor moves back into the window, the previous recording gets truncated and GameCam starts recording again from the beginning of the file. Is there any way to modify this behavior? Is there a configuration file or a registry key where one can set which settings and features are to be used ?

This is related to the overlay in Game Cam recording.
Again, this might be due to recording the game in windowed-mode.

This is the third bug I'm posting regarding using GameCam with FSX.
FSX allows users to undock auxiliary windows but if I do this while GameCam is on, FSX crashes. I will provide a video clip to illustrate this problem. Does anyone know why is this happening and how to fix it?

Again, this sounds related to recording the game in windowed-mode.

Bug #4.
For the past few days I have been trying to customize the options in the context menu. My settings work for a while. However, after a few hours, without reason or any warning, they are reset to their defaults.
If this is a feature, is there any way to disable it?

What exact version of Game Cam are you using?
(Mouse over the GameCamV2.exe in the Game Cam V2 folder to see the Filer Version number.)

The preview window is very useful but it would be even more useful if I could undock it. Is there any way to do this?

The Preview Window can be hidden by pressing the Interface Key \ + F4 key.
It can also be moved by pressing the Interface Key \ and then dragging the Preview Window with mouse.

Tommyboy,

Thanks for your explanations. Would you mind elaborating on what difference does it make (from GameCam's point of view) whether the game runs on full screen or in windowed mode?

I'm a DirectX developer and can't really understand why it would make such a big difference; any explanation would be very much appreciated. In spite of the problems I'm experiencing I think GameCam is a fantastic camera. If there's anything I can do to help let me know.

I'll reply to a couple of your comments later, with a video clip showing what i mean.

In the meantime, regarding your comment,

The Preview Window can be hidden by pressing the Interface Key \ + F4 key.
It can also be moved by pressing the Interface Key \ and then dragging the Preview Window with mouse.

I'm aware of that but I'm recording on a window the same size as YouTube's to get the best possible FPS I can. The Preview Window takes a relatively big chunk of that real estate. That's why I was wondering if it would be possible to undock it. Although, your comments regarding windowed mode makes me think that it's a no.

Thanks again,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I did some testing using an ATi Radeon video card and didn't really have any issues
with regards to the flickering. I will do some addition testing with a Geforce video card
and see if the issue can be reproduced.

The difference between Game Cam's full screen and windowed modes, from a programming view,
would best be answered by the developers. Also, as far as I know, the Game Cam Preview
Window can be hidden, but it can't be completely absent from Game Cam.
The best plan would be to contact the developers regusersupport@planetgamecam.com
